Nagpur: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh engage in war of words after the controversial renovation of the Jallianwala Bagh in Punjab.
Around 1,000 people died in April 1919 after the British, led by General Dyre opened fire on men and women who were protesting peacefully against the Rowlatt act.
The site was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday.
During the event, Modi also inaugurated the museum galleries at the memorial.
Gandhi in a tweet said that it is “an insult to the martyrs of Jallianwala Bagh” and this move can only be done by someone who doesn’t know the meaning of martyrdom.
He added that he is the son of a martyr and will not tolerate an insult to the martyrs at any cost.
On the other hand, Punjab chief minister and Congress leader Singh claimed that the revamped Jallianwala Bagh “looks nice to him.”
“I was a part of the inauguration function of the renovated Jallianwala Bagh when Prime Minister Narendra Modi threw it open for the public.
A laser show was also organised. I feel they needed to repair the walls, which had developed cracks.
The renovation looks nice to me,” Singh added.
Instead of gaining appreciation, netizens were triggered by the revamped historical sight and the shoddy lights.
The revamped site in no time gained criticism.
Wreath-laying ceremony was held and a two-minute silence was observed in memory of those who were killed in the massacre.
Light and sound show was held to depict the events.
The revamped site has covered the bullet marks on the walls with models of the freedom fighters.
