1.20 lakh deaths recorded due to negligence in road accidents in 2020: NCRB

Nagpur: According to the latest government data, India recorded 1.20 lakh cases of “deaths due to negligence relating to road accidents” in 2020.

Around 328 people lost their lives every day on an average the coronavirus lockdown which was imposed in March last year.

Almost 3.92 lakh people have lost their lives in the last three years due to negligence related to road accidents, states the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2020 report.

The report states that 1.20 lakh deaths were recorded in 2020, while in 2019 figures stood at 1.36 lakh and 1.35 lakh in the year 2018. 1.35 lakh cases of ‘hit and run’ were logged in the country since 2018 of which 41,196 cases were recorded in 2020 alone.

On an average, 112 cases of hit and run were reported across the country in 2020. In 2019, 37,504 cases were recorded and 47,028 in 2018 as per the data.

According to the report, 52 death cases due to negligence relating to rail accidents were recorded across the country in 2020, 55 in 2019 and 35 cases in 2018.

51 cases of “deaths due to negligence of civic bodies” in 2020. There was a drop in the numbers as compared to the previous year, in 2019, 147 deaths were recorded, meanwhile in 2018, 40 deaths were recorded.
