The new parking facility will open in 2030.
Cycling is a common mode of transport in the Netherlands, with 36% of Dutch people listing the bicycle as their most frequent way of getting around on a typical day,as opposed to the car (45%) and public transport (11%).
Cycling has a modal share of 27% of all trips (urban and rural) nationwide.
In cities this is even higher, such as Amsterdam which has 38%,and Zwolle 46%.
Amsterdam is well known as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities, with high levels of bicycle infrastructure, planning and funding, tourism — as well as high levels of bike theft, safety concerns and overcrowding in places.
Though considered one of the most well known centers of bicycle culture worldwide, numerous other cities in the Netherlands and globally outrank Amersterdam in bike-friendliness, including The Hague, Eindhoven and Almere, which were nominated for the Fietsstad 2014 awards. The city of Groningen won the award in 2001.
A large garage with space for 8,800 bicycles will be built under the eastern railroad tracks of Amsterdam Central Station.
There will also be 450 shared bicycles available at the location.
The new parking facility will open in 2030. Its construction is part of the renovation of the station, which started at the end of last year.
The project is scheduled to take about ten years.
It is a collaboration between the city of Amsterdam, railroad infrastructure firm ProRail, the NS, and the Amsterdam Public Transportation Region.
The NS will operate the new facility.
The City of Amsterdam is taking a variety of measures to improve its cycling network.
Cycle paths are being overhauled to make them wider, smoother, faster, and more easily recognisable.
In addition, the city government is also:
- Connecting cycle paths to eliminate bottlenecks and problem areas.
- Creating attractive new cycle routes: the ‘Green Network’.
3.Providing cyclists with more room on popular routes.
A cycling survey will also be held to determine whether
Amsterdammers are satisfied with the new cycle network.
