Nagpur: India on Thursday recorded the highest number of Omicron cases in a day. 122 cases of the newly-discovered variant were reported in the country, as per the Union health ministry.
Till now, India has reported a total of 358 Covid-19 cases across 17 states and zero deaths due to the variant. Maharashtra tops the list with the highest number of 88 cases of the variant, followed by Delhi with 67 cases, Telangana with 38 cases, Tamil Nadu, 34 cases, Karnataka 31 cases and Gujarat 30 cases.
Several states across the country have imposed night curfews to curb the spread of omicron cases and avoid large gatherings at public gatherings. States like Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka have imposed a ban on large gatherings and ordered night curfew.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a Covid-19 review meeting in which he stressed upon how important it is for the states to have enough oxygen supply equipment installed. He also emphasized mass testing and increasing the Covid-19 vaccination drive in certain districts. Modi said, “We should be satark and saavdhan inview of the new variant.”
After a presentation by the health ministry, Modi directed the authorities to ensure heightened and close monitoring of emerging hotspots. Further in a statement Modi said, “The fight against the pandemic is not over, he (the Prime Minister) said, and the need for continued adherence to Covid safe behavior is of paramount importance even today.”
