125 passengers from Italy test positive in Amritsar; Centre says not to panic

Nagpur: Almost 125 passengers who arrived at Amritsar airport from Milan on a chartered flight tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday.

The flight was operated by EuroAtlantic airways landed in Amritsar at around 1:30pm today with 179 passengers, of which 125 tested positive for Covid-19. Italy has been categorised as ‘at risk’ country by the union health ministry, hence an RT-PCR test was conducted for 160 passengers. Other 19 remaining passengers were children and infants were exempted from the test.

According to a report, the patients who have been tested positive will be sent to institutional quarantine. India today reported over 90,000 new Covid-19 cases, a steep jump of 65 per cent from Wednesday due to Omicron cases.

The central government said the surge of Covid-19 cases is happening in cities and the Omicron variant is a predominant circulating strain. The government also said that there is no need to panic and one must be alert, disciplined and prepared, adding that the country will face this phase of the pandemic as well.

“Upsurge of infections is happening in cities. Omicron is the predominant circulating strain and mass gatherings need to be avoided to reduce the speed of the spread of infection,” the officials said.
