Nagpur: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Wednesday said that the state government wants to avoid re-imposing Covid-19 curbs and hence people should continue to wear masks and vaccination against the virus is important.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a virtual meeting with the chief ministers of the states to review the Covid-19 situation in the country. In the meeting, Thackeray urged the Centre to make vaccination mandatory to avoid the fourth wave of Covid-19.
Thackeray’s statement comes just a few hours after health minister Rajesh Tope hinted that the state government might bring back the mask mandate in the crowded places due to a rise in the Covid-19 cases in the state. The health minister however said that there is no need to panic as the active caseload still counts below 1,000.
According to Tope, Maharashtra is currently carrying out as many as 25,000 tests on an average each day. On April 1, Maharashtra lifted all Covid-19-related restrictions, including mandatory wearing of masks in public places.
