Nagpur: There were nearly 4.7 million deaths due to Covid-19 in 2020-21, as per a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday. The report also revealed that nearly there were a total of 15 million such deaths globally.
The WHO data reveals that the actual number of deaths was nearly 10 times the government count. As of May, India’s official Covid-19 death toll is 5.2 lakh. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “These sobering data not only point to the impact of the pandemic but also to the need for all countries to invest in more resilient health systems that can sustain essential health services during crises, including stronger health information systems.”
