Nagpur: Special forces in Guinea seized power in a coup on Sunday, arresting the president and imposing a curfew in the country.
“We have decided, after having taken the president, to dissolve the constitution,” said one of the officials in a video sent to news agency AFP.
The officer also added that the country’s land and air borders have been sealed and the government has been dissolved.
“The duty of a soldier is to save the country.” “We will no longer entrust politics to one man.
We will entrust it to the people,” said army Col. Mamadi Doumbouya.
The video also showed Guinea President Alpha Conde sitting on a sofa, surrounded by the troops.
The leader refused to answer a question from one soldier.
The troops refused to issue a timeline to release the president and claimed that the 83-year-old leader has access to medical care and his doctors.
Conde’s removal comes after he sought a controversial third term in office last year and claimed that the term limits don’t apply to him.
The military leaders have put the West African nation back under military rule for the first time after a decade. As per a report, night curfew too, has been imposed.
