Nagpur: A 29-year-old man who returned to Mumbai from New York on Friday tested positive for the omicron variant, according to the Brihanmumbai municipal corporation (BMC).
The New York returnee has surprisingly no symptoms and had taken three doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccination. He tested positive for Covid-19 in a test conducted at the airport on November 9, after which his samples were sent for genome sequencing.
BMC in a statement said, “The patient has been admitted to a hospital as a precautionary measure and he has no symptoms.” Mumbai’s Omicron tally reached 15, of which five cases were from outside Mumbai. Eight new cases of the Omicron variant were reported on Friday.
Out of the 15 cases, 13 have been discharged from the hospital. According to experts, none of the cases had severe symptoms.
The Omicron tally in Maharashtra has reached the 40 mark, on the other hand, 101 cases of the variant have been reported in the country.
The Health ministry while addressing a press conference on Friday urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, mass gathering and observe low-intensive festivities ahead of New Years in the view of emerging risks due to the Omicron variant.
