Nagpur: Close aides of former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh have urged him to seek a floor test after several leaders resigned from their posts. This development comes after Navjyot Singh Sidhu’s resignation from the post of Punjab Congress chief.
Soon after Sidhu’s resignation, Punjab cabinet minister Razia Sultana, days after taking oath as a legislator, three other Punjab congress leaders resigned from their respective posts. Yoginder Dhingra resigned from the party’s general secretary post, Gulzar Inder Chahal resigned as treasurer and Gautam Seth resigned as the general secretary (in-charge of training) of the state Congress.
Navjyot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday resigned from the post of Punjab Congress chief. The announcement was made by him on Twitter. Sidhu posted the letter he had written to Sonia Gandhi.
Soon after posting about his resignation, former chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh tweeted “I told you so..he is not a stable man and not fit for the border state of Punjab.” Sigh also called Sidhu a “shifty character,” typical of someone who had “deserted the Indian team in 1996 in England.”
“That’s what his real character is. I’ve known this boy since his childhood and he has been a loner and can never be a team player,” Singh added.
It is speculated that Sidhu was upset about the key home ministry being assigned Deputy chief minister SS Randhawa. Another reason why Sidhu’s rift with the party widened was due to OP Soni’s appointment as the second Deputy chief minister to Charanjit Singh Channi.
Captain is currently in the national capital where he is likely to meet Home minister Amit Shah and BJP’s national president JP Nadda.
