Nagpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on an official tour to the US met Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington DC today. Before holding bilateral talks with the US Prez Joe Biden, Modi held talks with Harris regarding India’s neighboring country Pakistan.
During his first in-person meeting with Harris, Modi described India and the US as “natural partners” as two leaders discussed the Indo-US strategic partnership. The duo also discussed global issues—including threats to democracy, Taliban-controlled Afghanistan and Indo-Pacific issues, according to PTI.
Modi in a joint press briefing with Harris said “India and America are natural partners. We have similar values, similar geopolitical interests.” Modi also hailed Harris and Biden for their efforts to tackle Covid-19 pandemic in the US and said “In short time you have had many achievements to your credit, be it Covid-19, climate change or the quad.”
“You are the source of inspiration for so many people across the world. I am completely confident that our bilateral relationship will touch new heights under President Biden and your leadership,” Modi told Harris. Kamala Harris is the 49th vice president of the US and the first woman to bag the post.
Soon after meeting Harris, Modi tweeted “Glad to have met VP Kamala Harris. Her feat has inspired the entire world. We talked about multiple subjects that will further cement the India-USA friendship, which is based on shared values and cultural linkages.”
Modi will be holding bilateral talks with US President Joe Biden later during the day. This will also be his first bilateral meeting with Biden.
Modi is all set to address the UN General Assembly. He was welcomed by a crowd of Indian Americans chanting his name and waving the tricolor. Despite light rain early in the morning, a significant number of Indian Americans had gathered there to welcome the Indian prime minister. However, the PM was seen meeting the Indian-Americans without his mask.
