Over 50 persons fell ill due to food poisoning in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur

R S Singh

On Sunday, more than 50 people, including women and children, became ill as a result of food poisoning in Bishunpur village, Surajpur district, Chhattisgarh.

According to reports, a Dashagatra programme (feast on the tenth day after death) was held in the village, and over 100 people attended. After a while, most people began vomiting and complaining of diarrhoea.

The villagers reported the incident to the nearest Ramanujnagar health centre. Based on the information, the health department personnel arrived in the village and began treating the villagers by establishing a camp. Although a few patients recovered, the health of many others deteriorated, and they were referred to the Surajpur district hospital.

Surajpur Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) R S Singh said, “Around 50 to 55 people in Bishunpur village were suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea. On Sunday, 37 of these patients were admitted to Surajpur District Hospital. All of the patients’ health conditions are stable, as are the villagers’.”

“All of the villagers were advised to eat fresh food and drink fresh water. In addition, the department has provided them with chlorine and bleaching powder and instructed them on how to use them. The area’s Regional Health Officer (RHO) has also been instructed to monitor the area for a week,” Singh said.

“I had talked to the RHO on Monday morning about the situation then it came to light that no new case was reported since last night and the situation is under control. “The patients in the hospital are also stable, and they are expected to be discharged this evening,” CMHO Singh added.
