Rahul Gandhi pays tribute to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP, paid tribute to his grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on Monday at her memorial Shakti Sthal in the national capital.

The former Congress president also paid tribute to his father and another former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, at the Veer Bhumi memorial. Rahul Gandhi, who has been leading the over 3,500-kilometer-long “Bharat Jodo Yatra” from Kanyakumari to Kashmir since September 7, is in the national capital for a nine-day break. On January 3, the foot march will resume.

Last week, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra refused to describe the assassinations of the two former Prime Ministers as national sacrifices. Mishra was responding to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s “dog” remark, in which Kharge stated in parliament that Congress leaders had sacrificed their lives for the country and asked BJP leaders if they had done the same.

On December 24, the Bharat Jodo Yatra arrived in the national capital. The rally arrived in southeast Delhi’s Badarpur from Haryana’s Faridabad. Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi also joined the yatra for the first time, as did Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra, as the march headed to the Red Fort.

The yatra was also attended by Makkal Needhi Maiam president and veteran actor Kamal Haasan on December 24 in Delhi. On December 23, Rajasthan marked the 100th day of the foot march.

Several Bollywood celebrities have already taken part in the yatra, including Pooja Bhatt, Riteish Deshmukh, Swara Bhaskar, and Riya Sen. The Bharat Jodo Yatra has visited Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Haryana, in addition to Rajasthan.

According to the Congress, it is the longest foot march by any Indian politician in the country’s history. Rahul Gandhi hopes to mobilise the party’s cadre and unite the general public against the BJP’s “divisive politics in the country” through this Yatra.
