RIVM: Omikron decline continues, virus on all fronts retreating

Spread the love

The impact of omikron is decreasing in the Netherlands on all fronts. Last week, RIVM reported 301,144 positive tests. That is 37 percent less than last week.

Fewer and fewer people are being tested. Last week half a million people visited a test street of the GGD. That is 38 percent less than a week earlier. The percentage of them who test positive is still high: 58 percent.

In the oldest age categories, the number of positive tests increased last week, but there is now also a decrease. The virus is most prevalent among people in their twenties.

The R-number, which indicates how many people are infected by one infected person, has also fallen further. The most recent reproduction number is from February 7 and is estimated to be 0.83. That means the virus is declining. This is because enough people are infected or vaccinated.

Hospitals

Not only in the test streets, but also in the hospitals it is slowly becoming quieter, reports the National Coordination Center for Patients Distribution (LCPS). Last Tuesday there were 1650 corona patients in hospital. Today there are 1626.

At the IC, the occupation remained about the same. There are now 171 patients. Since December, when there were more than 600 corona patients in the ICU, that number has decreased very gradually.

Not all patients who test positive in hospital are in hospital because of corona.

An analysis by the NICE foundation (which, like the LCPS, registers hospital admissions) shows that in 31 percent of all hospital admissions in the past two weeks, Covid-19 was not the reason that someone was admitted. In the IC admissions, that was 20 percent.
