Sony Honda Mobility to unveil first EV at January CES event

Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), a joint venture between Sony and Honda, is set to make a major announcement on January 4 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Both companies have confirmed the news, according to GSM Arena, a tech news website. Sony announced the date and time for the CES 2023 keynote, as well as the presence of Sony Honda Mobility on stage. Sony Honda Mobility hasn’t revealed much about the upcoming vehicle.

According to GSM Arena, the joint venture expects to start manufacturing its first electric vehicle in 2026, with a focus on North American production and online sales in that market. Japan will be the second market to be covered, followed by Europe. According to Sony Honda Mobility, the unnamed vehicle may be capable of Level 3 autonomous driving in some situations and Level 2+ in others. However, many features have yet to be confirmed, according to GSM Arena.

Furthermore, the company claims that subscription services will add value to the car. A full-fledged PlayStation 5 is also rumoured to be part of the vehicle’s entertainment system. Honda will bring its engineering prowess and knowledge of car manufacturing to the joint venture with Sony. According to GSM Arena, it is unclear whether Honda or Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) will be in charge of after-sales support.
