Nagpur: The World Health Organisation and UNICEF on Sunday said that teachers and school staff should be among the groups prioritized for Covid-19 vaccinations.

The UN agencies in statement said, “measures to ensure that schools can stay open during pandemic include offering teachers and other school staff the Covid-19 vaccine as a part of target population groups in national vaccination plans.”

The recommendation was already made by the WHO experts in November last year before the vaccine roll-out.

The agencies also said that it was “vital that classroom-based learning continue uninterrupted,” despite the spread of the delta variant.

WHO European region director Hans Kluge said “The pandemic has caused the most catastrophic disruption to education in history.”

He added that this is of paramount importance for children’s education, mental health, and social skills for schools to help equip children to be happy and productive members of the society.

The agencies further added that the countries should start vaccinating children above the age of 12.
